213/323/738 Area Codes
The 213/323 area code region was formed in 2017 when the 323 area code underwent an overlay that eliminated the boundary between the 213 area code region and the neighboring 323 area code region. The resulting combined 213/323 region is thus served by both the 213 and the 323 area codes.
On August 22, 2022, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) filed Application (A.) 22-08-009 on behalf of the telecommunications industry, requesting that the CPUC approve an overlay area code in the 213/323 area code region to provide additional numbering resources in the region.
On March 16, 2023, the CPUC approved a new area code of 738 as an overlay on top of the 213/323 area code. Read the press release here.

Background
The 213 area code was created in 1947 and was one of the original three area codes in California. The 213 area code was split five times between 1951 and 1991, creating the 714 area code in 1951, the 805 area code in 1957, the 818 area code in 1984, the 310 area code in 1991 and the 323 area code in 1998. In 2017, the CPUC approved an elimination of the boundary between the 213 and 323 area codes, creating the 213/323 overlay area codes. The 213/323 area codes generally serve the downtown portion of the City of Los Angeles and the surrounding cities and communities, including Alhambra, Bell, Bell Gardens, Beverly Hills, Commerce, Cudahy, Glendale, Hawthorne, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Rosemead, South Gate, South Pasadena, Vernon and West Hollywood, as well as unincorporated portions of Los Angeles County.
